Palm trees are an excellent way to add a little touch of the tropical outdoors to your garden paradise. Keep in mind that North Floridians do not have the warmer winters as that of our neighbors in the Central and South Florida locations. Therefore, we are limited by the types of palms we can utilize in our landscapes. Below is a listing of palms we are able to grow in North Florida.Call or e-mail for pricing and information on current stock. Sabal Palm - Sabal palmetto Sabal Palms are native to our coast lines from Texas all the around to the Carolinas. Since they are native, they require little care once established. We sell sabal palms both booted (with petiole junction remaining) and non booted or slick (petiole junction is removed).
Mexican Fan Palm, Washington Palm- Washingtonia robusta As the common name indicates, this palm originated in Mexico. It is hardy to around 20 degrees F. Growth rate is fast with the tree reaching heights of 70-100'. Fast growth is seen with irrigation. Salt tolerance is moderate and drought tolerance is high.
Pygmy date palm - Phoenix roebelenii This palm originated in SouthEast Asia. It tolerates many soil conditions. the Pygmy date palm is a slow grower and reaches a height of 8-10'. It must be planted in a protected area in the Northern Florida region. Severe damage can occur at temperatures of 20 degrees F. Sago palm - Cycas revoluta (Cycad) I know the Sago palm is not actually a palm at all. In fact, it is a member of the Cycad family which has been around since the time of the dinosaures. Slow growth can be expected, but sagos can get rather large widths. Heights of 10-15' can be reached. The plant should not be planted next to driveways and walkways due to the width it can reach. Windmill Palm, Chinese Windmill Palm, Hemp Palm - Trachycarpus fortunei As the common name indicates, this palm originated in China. Growth rate is moderate reaching heights of 25'. Salt tolerance is low to moderate and drought tolerance is moderate. It will tolerate partial shade. Chinese Fan Palm - Livistona chinensis Originating in China, this palm is a slow grower that reaches heights of 25'. Salt and drought tolerance is moderate. Sylvester Palm, Toddy Palm, Wild Date Palm, India Palm - Wild Date Palm - Phoenix sylvestris This palm originated in India. They have a slow growth rate and reach a height of 40'. Salt tolerance is low and drought tolerance is high. The practice of collecting the sap from the tree to make an alcoholic beverage in India is how the tree gained the name Toddy Palm. Canary Island Date Palm - Phoenix canariensis Originating in the Canary Islands, the Canary Island date palm is a slow grower and grows 40' tall. Salt tolerance is moderate and drought tolerance is high. When the petioles are removed, the leaf scars form an interesting pattern on these trees. Queen Palm - Syagrus romanzoffiana Originating is Southern Brazil and Argentina this palm grows moderate to fast and reaches a height of 40'. Salt and drought tolerance is moderate. Damage can occur at temperatures of 24 degree F. It is best to plant this tree in the landscape where it will be protected from the brisk winter Northern wind. European Fan Palm- Chamaerops humilis This palm originated in the Mediterranean region. It has a cold hardiness to 0 degrees F. It has a moderate salt tolerance and high drought tolerance. The growth rate is slow and reaches a height of 10'. Pindo Palm, Jelly Palm, Wine Palm- Butia capitata Pindo Palms originated in central-southern Brazil, contiguous Argentina and Uraguay. It is hardy in zones 8A-10B. It has been reported that this tree is hardy to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and has survived as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Salt tolerance is low. The pindo palm has a high drought tolerance. |
